Why Do My Windows Fog or Ice Up in Winter  ??

As temperatures drop, many homeowners notice condensation or ice forming on their windows. This is a common issue caused by a mix of indoor humidity and cold outdoor air. Here’s what’s happening and how to reduce it:
Why It Happens:
Warm indoor air holds moisture. When it meets the cold glass, it cools and releases water as condensation.
If humidity levels are too high, excess moisture can freeze, leading to ice buildup.

1. Improve ventilation - Open windows briefly when possible, use exhaust fans while cooking or showering, and ensure proper air circulation. Opening the blinds or curtains during the day &  ensure your vents aren't blocked. This will  improve the circulation of airflow.

2. Reduce & Control Humidity - Keep indoor humidity down. Use a dehumidifier to lower indoor moisture levels.  Adjust heating habits.

3. Upgrade your windows - Although this can literally happen on any glass, older windows or those with poor seals may be more prone to this issue. Call us today for a free estimate!

Understanding & Reducing Condensation

UNDERSTANDING CONDENSATION

Avoiding or reducing window condensation - CHART

Here is a simple diagram that shows the correlation between humidity levels & the temperature ranges that affect the glass.

Too much indoor moisture in winter can lead to condensation on windows, which may cause mold growth, ice buildup, and even damage to window frames. Keeping humidity at the right level helps protect your home and improve comfort.
